Which Australian police check should I get for immigration purposes?
For many different Australian visas you will need an Australian police check. These include the Graduate Visas (485), Employer Sponsored Visas, Partner Visas and Skilled Visas.
It is important that you apply for the correct police check. Immigration will only accept specific official police checks.
- DO NOT GOOGLE Australian police check and apply for the top one. You will pay extra and it is not an official police check.
- DO NOT APPLY AT YOUR LOCAL POLICE STATION. This will only be for a state police check (not national).
You will need to apply for the Australian Federal National Police Check. This currently costs $42.
Applying for the Australian Police Clearance for immigration

When you are applying for the police clearance you will need to provide 100 points of ID. You will need to attach clear scans of these documents. Some of the most common forms of ID include; Passport, Bank Card, Bank Statement, Lease Agreement, and/or Birth Certificate.
In section 2.3 When asked about the Purpose of the Check:
Purpose Type: Commonwealth Employment/Purpose
Purpose of Check: 33- Immigration Citizenship – for supply to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection
Once you have applied It will take roughly 2 days to be emailed to you electronically.
