Why can’t foreigners do an apprenticeship in Australia?
Ever wondered why foreigners can’t do an apprenticeship in Australia? This video explains why and discusses your alternative options.
What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a form of “on-the-job training” that is designed to teach someone a particular trade. It is by far the most common way Australians learn a trade, requiring only a couple of days a month attendance at an actual Trade College. Australian Apprentices also get paid while they undertake their apprenticeship which might seem very appealing as a foreigner to also take this path. The Australian apprenticeship system is overseen by the Australian government where they provide a wide variety of financial subsidies to employers and apprentices to encourage people to go down this path.
No visa allows foreigners to undertake an apprenticeship
Unfortunately, when signing up for an apprenticeship you must either be an Australian Citizen or a permanent resident. if you do not hold citizenship or are a permanent resident you will not qualify to join the program. There is also no visa to obtain to allow you to undertake an apprenticeship. BUT this does not mean you cannot study a trade in Australia.
