Western Australia (WA) and Victoria (VIC) have recently conducted significant invitation rounds for skilled migration under Australia’s 2024-25 program year, reflecting each state’s priorities and labour market needs.
The points needed for an invitation were very high. This is likely due to the states being the first to send out invites for the new financial year and the pent up demand. I would expect the points required to receive an invitation to drop significantly in the future invitation rounds this year.
Western Australia (WA)
Western Australia has secured over 5000 places for skilled migrants for the 2024-25 program year, marking a considerable increase from previous years. The invitation rounds have focused on key sectors such as healthcare, engineering, and information technology, aiming to address skill shortages in these crucial areas. The state has made 2,700 invitations available for the Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) visa and 3,800 for the Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491) visa. These allocations are designed to support WA’s continued economic growth and to attract talent to both metropolitan and regional areas.
Victoria (VIC)
Victoria has similarly been proactive, with 5,000 skilled visa nominations allocated for the year. The state has issued invitations under both the Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491) visa categories, with a particular focus on health occupations. Notably, Victoria has opened up its nomination process to both onshore and offshore applicants, allowing a broader range of skilled workers to apply. The state has also expanded its eligible occupation list, removing the requirement for applicants to work in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine) fields.
Both states have made strategic adjustments to their skilled migration programs to attract talent in key industries and support regional development. These changes reflect the ongoing efforts to meet labour market demands while balancing population growth across different regions.
