Can foreigners do an automotive apprenticeship in Australia?

Published: Aug 5, 2020

As of August 5, 2020, international students are not eligible to undertake a motor mechanic apprenticeship in Australia. However, there is an alternative pathway for those aspiring to become qualified motor mechanics in Australia. International students can enroll in a 24-month vocational course specifically designed for this purpose.

An apprenticeship in Australia involves learning a skilled trade under the guidance of a qualified tradesperson and typically lasts 4 years, leading to a Certificate III in the chosen trade. Apprentices work on the job for four days a week and study with an education provider for one day a week. They are paid throughout the apprenticeship, with their wages and some educational fees subsidized by the government.

However, foreigners cannot undertake a traditional 4-year apprenticeship in Australia due to work visa restrictions. Despite this limitation, there are still opportunities for international students to learn a trade in Australia through alternative educational pathways. These pathways include enrolling in vocational courses that provide similar training and qualifications in various trades, such as carpentry, auto mechanics, electricians, or plumbing.
