Victorian Government Expands Pathways for International Graduates to Access Skilled Work Regional Visa
In a bid to strengthen regional growth and attract skilled applicants, the Victorian Government has announced new pathways for international student graduates to access the Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491). This initiative is aimed at strengthening regional communities and is set to take effect in the 2024-25 financial year.
A key feature of the expansion is the reservation of at least 500 subclass 491 visa nomination places exclusively for international graduates from Victorian educational institutions. This constitutes at least 25 percent of Victoria’s overall allocation of the visa for the year. The move highlights the government’s commitment to providing more opportunities for graduates to continue their careers and contribute to regional Victoria’s economy.
Also, graduates currently residing and working in Melbourne will now have the option to submit a Registration of Interest (ROI) for subclass 491 visa nomination opening up a pathway for them to relocate to regional Victoria. This change marks a significant step in making it easier for international graduates to transition from metropolitan to regional areas then helping to address workforce shortages and enhancing regional economic development.
The Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491) is designed to allow skilled workers and their families to live, work, and study in designated regional areas. The new initiative will not only benefit international students by offering them a clear path to permanent residency, but it will also support Victoria’s regional areas by attracting skilled talent into these communities.
With this announcement, the Victorian Government continues to position itself as a leader in supporting international graduates and addressing regional workforce needs offering long-term benefits to both the graduates and the state’s economy.
