Should I apply for the Temporary Graduate Visa or the Employer Sponsored Visa?
We have a lot of students who finish their course, might have an employer who offers to sponsor their visa. I am often asked “Should I do this employer sponsored or go the temporary graduate work visa?” My answer is this, it really depends on your circumstances, but in most situations, I would always recommend a temporary graduate visa.
What is the difference between these two visas?
For the employer sponsored visa, you need an employer to sponsor your visa. You can only work for that employer. The duration of the employer sponsored visa can be anywhere from one to four years, depending on the occupation. And the employer sponsored visa is also a lot more expensive than a temporary graduate visa.
With the Temporary Graduate Visa, you’re not tied to any employer. You can work in any occupation. The duration of the visa can be from 18 months to longer, and it is significantly cheaper.
The requirements for employer sponsored visa are also quite difficult to meet. Usually, you need to have two years of work experience plus a relevant qualification just to even potentially be able to apply for the employer sponsored visa.
There are certain circumstances where I would recommend someone go the employer sponsored visa, and that would realistically only be if they’re going for that permanent employer sponsored visa. The permanent employer sponsored visa (Subclass 186) has a lot stricter requirements. You need to have three years of post-qualification full-time work experience.
Realistically, 99% of the time I would recommend student first move onto that Graduate Work Visa. This way, you are not tied to the company. The company can always nominate you or sponsor you in the future as well if you want. Applying for the Graduate Work Visa first, just gives you a lot more flexibility plus it’s cheaper and it’s a lot easier to apply for.
